Project Overview

The clients requirement was for a high-capacity, future-ready fuel island capable of supporting the retailer’s growing delivery fleet. The system needed to store and dispense Diesel, Petrol and AdBlue. Strict compliance with APEA Blue Book standards, and full environmental safeguards were essential. The challenge was to design, manufacture, and install an integrated fuel solution that combined robust storage, reliable dispensing, and seamless monitoring all within a busy distribution hub environment.

Solution 

Ledbury Welding & Engineering provided a complete turnkey fuel installation package. The system comprised:

  • Above-ground bunded tanks: a 50,000-litre diesel tank, a 40,000 Petrol tank, and a 2,000-litre AdBlue tank, all built to BS 799-5, UL142, and UL2085 standards with 110% integral bunding, overfill prevention, and leak detection.
  • Fuel island equipment: multiple dispensers delivering high flow rates (50 LPM), with twin and single pumps configured for diesel and AdBlue. Future-proofing was achieved by designing pipework and infrastructure to accommodate petrol dispensers at a later stage.
  • Management and monitoring systems: Fuel management pedestals and tank gauging systems linked directly to the clients central database, providing live visibility of stock, usage, and alarms.
  • Environmental and safety systems: double-contained pipework, bund and overfill alarms, Class 1 leak detection, fire-rated tanks, and zoning to APEA Blue Book standards ensured the highest levels of compliance and safety.
  • Integration and commissioning: coordinated installation with main contractor and other trades, including electrical interlocks, Fireman’s emergency shut-off switches, and DSEAR-compliant risk assessments. Commissioning included fuel testing, staff training, and O&M manuals to ensure immediate operational readiness.
